How to Perform Tawaf Correctly, Step by Step

The moment you enter the mataf and see the Kaabah, the crowd, emotion, and scale of Masjid Al-Haram can feel overwhelming. Knowing how to perform tawaf correctly before you arrive helps you remain calm, protect the rights of other worshippers, and focus fully on your ibadah. Tawaf is not a race or a test of how close you can stand to the Kaabah. It is a devoted act of worship performed with humility, patience, and remembrance of Allah.

For Umrah pilgrims, tawaf is the central rite performed after entering ihram and arriving in Makkah. While your group leader can provide on-ground guidance, understanding the purpose and sequence beforehand gives you greater confidence, especially during busy periods.

Prepare Before You Enter the Mataf

Before beginning tawaf, make sure you are in a state of wudu. The majority of scholars consider wudu a condition for a valid tawaf, so it is wise to renew it before entering the tawaf area. Use the restroom and perform wudu early, as facilities can be busy close to prayer times.

If you are performing Umrah, remain in your ihram garments and observe the restrictions of ihram. Men should wear the two pieces of ihram cloth correctly. Women may wear modest, loose clothing that fulfills Islamic requirements, without a fixed ihram uniform. Women should not cover the face with a fitted niqab while in ihram, although they may lower a loose covering when needed around non-mahram men.

Set your intention in your heart. You do not need to say a long formula aloud. Know that you are performing tawaf for Umrah and begin with sincerity. If you are joining a guided group, agree on a meeting point before entering the crowd. It is common for family members to become separated, particularly during peak hours. Staying together is helpful, but completing tawaf safely and peacefully matters more than forcing your way through a dense crowd.

How to Perform Tawaf Correctly

Tawaf consists of seven complete circuits around the Kaabah, moving counterclockwise with the Kaabah on your left. Each circuit begins and ends at the line of the Black Stone, known as Al-Hajar Al-Aswad. Staff and signs may help indicate the line, but it is not always easy to see in a crowded mataf.

Begin at the Black Stone

Stand in line with the Black Stone, facing it if space allows, and begin your first circuit. If you can reach it without pushing, harming someone, or causing disruption, it is Sunnah to touch or kiss the Black Stone. In most situations, especially for elderly pilgrims, women, families, and those performing Umrah during crowded seasons, it is better not to attempt this.

From a respectful distance, raise your right hand toward the Black Stone and say Allahu Akbar. Then begin walking. This gesture is sufficient. Do not push, argue, climb barriers, or place yourself or others at risk for the chance to touch the stone. The reward of tawaf is not reduced when you avoid harm and preserve good character.

Complete Seven Circuits With the Kaabah on Your Left

Walk around the Kaabah seven times. Each full round ends when you return to the alignment of the Black Stone. Counting carefully is useful, but do not become anxious if you lose track. You may count quietly on your fingers, use a simple counter, or have one family member keep count for the group.

If you are genuinely uncertain whether you have completed six or seven circuits, take the lower number and complete the additional circuit. This is generally the safer approach. If you need to pause briefly because of crowd movement, fatigue, or to assist someone in your care, resume from where you stopped. Try not to stand still in the main walking path, as this can create congestion.

You do not need to walk directly beside the Kaabah. In fact, during busy hours, the outer circles may be safer and more manageable. The tawaf area has different levels, and pilgrims who use wheelchairs or need a gentler pace may perform tawaf in designated areas. A slower tawaf completed with dignity and concentration is better than a rushed one that causes distress.

Keep the Hijr Ismail Outside Your Path

One important detail is the semicircular area beside the Kaabah, often called Hijr Ismail or Hatim. This space is considered part of the Kaabah. Therefore, your route must go around the outside of its low wall. Passing through the semicircular area would mean you have not completed a full circuit around the Kaabah.

As you walk, allow the flow of pilgrims to guide you. Avoid sudden changes in direction, holding hands in a wide chain across the path, or stopping to take photographs. Masjid Al-Haram is a place of worship, and a calm, considerate approach allows everyone to perform their tawaf more safely.

What to Say During Tawaf

There is no compulsory dua assigned to each circuit. You may make any dua from the Quran and Sunnah, speak to Allah in your own words, recite dhikr, send salutations upon the Prophet, peace be upon him, or remain quietly reflective. This flexibility is a mercy, particularly for first-time pilgrims who may feel pressured by printed booklets that assign a different supplication to every round.

A well-known supplication may be recited between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone: Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah wa qina adhaban-nar. Its meaning is: Our Lord, grant us goodness in this world and goodness in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.

If you reach the Yemeni Corner and can touch it easily with your right hand, you may do so. Do not kiss it, and do not point toward it from a distance. If the area is crowded, simply continue walking. There is no need to force your way toward either corner.

For many pilgrims, the most meaningful duas are personal: forgiveness for parents, good health, steadfast faith, a righteous family, relief from hardship, and acceptance of the Umrah. Prepare a short list before traveling, but leave room for sincere prayer in the moment.

Special Practices for Men

During tawaf for Umrah, men may practice idtiba by placing the upper ihram cloth under the right armpit and over the left shoulder, leaving the right shoulder uncovered. This is done for the tawaf itself. Once tawaf is complete, cover both shoulders before praying.

Men may also perform raml, a brisk walk with short steps, during the first three circuits of tawaf when it is possible and safe. Raml is not running, and it should never involve pushing through people or putting strain on the body. In a crowded mataf, simply walk normally. Women do not perform raml or idtiba.

These practices are Sunnah, not a reason to create difficulty. Older pilgrims, those with medical conditions, and anyone affected by crowd conditions should prioritize safety and move at a comfortable pace.

After the Seventh Circuit

When you complete the seventh circuit at the Black Stone line, your tawaf is complete. If possible, pray two rakahs near Maqam Ibrahim, the station of Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him. However, the area immediately behind Maqam Ibrahim can become crowded. You may pray the two rakahs anywhere within Masjid Al-Haram where you will not obstruct those walking in tawaf.

It is recommended to recite Surah Al-Kafirun in the first rakah and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second, though any Quranic recitation is valid. Afterward, if convenient, drink Zamzam water and make dua.

For Umrah, the next rite is sai between Safa and Marwah. Men should ensure their right shoulder is covered before leaving for sai. Your group leader can help direct you toward Safa, especially if this is your first time navigating the mosque levels and access routes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid During Tawaf

The most common mistake is believing that physical closeness to the Kaabah is required. It is not. Pushing toward the Black Stone, blocking others, or placing vulnerable family members in a tightly packed area can turn a sacred act into an unsafe experience. Choose space, patience, and courtesy.

Another mistake is treating fixed duas for every circuit as mandatory. They are not. Read what you know, make dua from the heart, and do not worry if you are unable to follow a booklet exactly. Your worship is not less meaningful because your words are simple.

Pilgrims should also avoid walking through Hijr Ismail, completing fewer than seven rounds, or turning tawaf into a sightseeing activity. Keep your phone safely stored unless there is a genuine need to contact your group. If prayer begins, follow the mosque arrangements and resume your tawaf afterward according to the guidance of your group leader or a qualified scholar.

Women who begin menstruation before tawaf should not perform tawaf until they are purified. Because travel schedules can be complex, speak promptly with your group leader and a qualified religious guide. Individual circumstances can differ, and timely guidance is far better than relying on assumptions.

A well-organized Umrah journey gives you the practical support to approach tawaf with a settled heart.
